Western Colorado Botanical Gardens: Butterflies, Orchids and a Riverside Walk in Grand Junction

The Western Colorado Botanical Gardens packs a tropical butterfly house, a cactus garden and a Japanese garden onto 15 acres by the Colorado River. Here is what to see and how to plan your visit.
The Western Colorado Botanical Gardens is a 15-acre garden at 655 Struthers Avenue on the Colorado River, just south of downtown Grand Junction. Its highlight is an indoor tropical rain forest with a butterfly house, orchids, koi and turtles, surrounded by outdoor cactus, rose, Japanese and children's gardens. Admission is $9 for adults and $4 for kids 3 to 11, and it is open Monday through Saturday.
It is one of the best rainy day or hot day stops in the valley, and it is small enough to see in an afternoon. Here is what to expect and how to fit it into a trip.

What to see at the gardens
The tropical rain forest and butterfly house
This is the main event. The greenhouse holds hundreds of tropical plants and orchids, plus koi, turtles, tortoises and tree frogs. The butterfly house is inside, and with some luck you can watch a butterfly come out of its chrysalis. Kids tend to want to stay here the whole time.
The outdoor gardens
Outside, paths wind through a cactus garden, an antique rose garden, an herb and native plant area, the Western Heritage Garden and a Japanese garden. The Children's Secret Garden is built for small explorers. Fall color and late roses make October a good month to walk the grounds.
Celebration Plaza
The open plaza is the gardens' event space. Check the calendar before a Saturday visit, since private events can change the hours.
Harvest Illuminated: October 22 to 24, 2026
Every fall the gardens light up for Fall at the Gardens: Harvest Illuminated, with glowing pumpkin sculptures carved by Food Network competitors, lit paths, music and Halloween decorations. The 2026 dates are Thursday, October 22, from 5 to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24, from 5 to 9 p.m. Proceeds support STRiVE, which serves children and adults with disabilities. Tickets are sold online through the STRiVE Harvest Illuminated page.
Pair it with a daytime trip to one of the pumpkin patches near Grand Junction for a full fall day.
